“Hit and Run” or “Suicide”?
Surely a hit and run in this case! How could a Kangaroo living in such a beautiful environment such as that of the Boranup Forest want to take its own life by jumping infront of oncoming traffic?
It is a well known fact that Kangaroo suicide is a major problem, particularly on the Nullarbor Plain. The Nullabor’s searing hot summer days are relentless and with the complete lack of trees the poor Kangaroos are unable to escape the extreme heat. The sweltering conditions combined with absolutely nothing to do drive the Kangaroos insane, some eventually resorting to suicide. The most common methods being…..
1) Jumping off the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight, or
2) Jumping out in front of oncoming traffic along the Eyre Highway
The latter of the two is obvious with the roadside of the Eyre Highway constantly littered with Kangaroos. It is a matter that must be dealt with. The government of Australia needs to provide funding within these communities so that Kangaroo Counselling is at hand and shade cloth can be erected!
Ok… All sick jokes aside.
No one likes seeing road kill. Especially when it is a native species. Motor vehicles/Motor vehicle drivers deplete native species numbers.
Drive safely and sensibly.
